A biology-first philosophy for children's residential care
Functional Care
A child's emotional and behavioural world does not exist separately from the body. Sleep, nutrition, physical health, stress physiology and development can all influence how a child experiences and responds to their environment.
Children arrive in care with different histories, needs, strengths and vulnerabilities. Functional Care seeks to understand the individual rather than assuming that the same pathway will be appropriate for every child.
Functional Care is intended to evolve. We draw from established evidence and emerging research, measure what can be measured responsibly, and refine practice as understanding develops.
Care is influenced by more than formal interventions. Relationships, light, nature, sleep, food, movement and the physical qualities of a home all contribute to the conditions in which children live and develop.
Functional Care does not reduce complex human experiences to biology alone. It recognises that biological, psychological, relational, social and environmental factors continually interact. Functional Care remains grounded in the relationships and everyday care at the heart of residential practice.
From Philosophy to practice
The Functional Care Model
The Functional Care Group is developing a proprietary model for putting Functional Care into residential practice. The model brings biological understanding, relational and trauma-informed care, purposeful environments and measurable outcomes together within a structured framework.

The Future of Care
Our ambition is to establish Functional Care as a credible, evidence-informed approach to residential care. We're building it through careful implementation, measurement, evaluation — with a willingness to change when the evidence demands it.
